10 Tips For Better Business Travel

There's no place like home. But home is not where many an executive should be, as they need to travel for work purposes, with jet lag, lack of sleep, luggage and travel issues not being an excuse for subpar performance. There are ways to avoid problems and arrive at your destination at the top of your game and feeling great.

Good planning always help. Sure this is a no-brainer, but give it some serious thought. Be prepared by completing all business documents and packing the night before or earlier. If there are family issues to attend to, take care of all of them before your flight leaves. Finally, do not leave home without confirming your trip - and of course, arrive early at the airport.

Call your credit card provider to check the surcharge for foreign ATM withdrawals or purchases. Usually, the surcharge would be about 2 to 3 percent.

What items should you bring? The first thing would be a big wallet that contains all your tickets, credit cards, and other vital papers that can fit into wallets. You can't pack without scratch paper and a few pens. And in case your cards don't work, have some cash handy with you.

It can be quite tiresome to remove all the metal objects in your jacket one by one - your phone, your keys, the whole works - just simply remove your jacket, place it on the conveyor belt, and go through security much faster that way.

Before leaving home, make sure you negotiate a transfer from the airport to the hotel. Determine the approximate cost and time of the transportation to avoid arriving late.

A business trip isn't complete without your laptop. Yes, even if you don't plan to use it in flight, you'll have the peace of mind that it's okay and by your side. It is important to hand carry the laptop to avoid having it mishandled by cavalier handlers who could care less for what's inside the baggage.

If the country or destination you're traveling to has another time zone, familiarize yourself with it by adjusting your watch accordingly. Unfortunately, you may also have to change your sleeping habits, but this is important for you to avoid jet lag.

If you're spending several consecutive nights in the same hotel, take this opportunity to do laundry. This may be something you'll have to do depending on how much you had packed for the trip.

Continue getting enough sleep and exercise. There has been research done that shows the good effects of exercise on business travelers who have to make presentations.

Don't be afraid to negotiate when it comes to cab fares. If you wait until you've reached your destination, you're at the cab driver's mercy.

However, no tip is more important than showing a positive attitude and smiling despite the hectic travel schedule. A stress free business traveler is a happy business traveler and one who performs better at his or her job.
