Since the 2010 World Cup, many people have added South Africa as a vacation destination. They have many private game farms and national parks. There are, however, several things that you should consider before going.
Budgets
Although the exchange rate is generally in the international visitor's favor, there are a variety of options available that can make your vacation more affordable. There are luxurious game lodges that offer elegant accommodation and five star service, generally on private game farms with organized game drives. These places are more for people who aren't worried about how much money they spend.
Most of the national parks offer self-catering cottages and/or camping facilities, with restaurants and small general stores available for visitors looking for a more affordable wildlife experience.
You also could stay in a hotel or guest house. You may have to hire a car, but you will have more freedom to see around South Africa. This place has many well put together camping sites.
The Season You Go
South Africa is in the southern hemisphere, so the seasons are reversed. The best game viewing time is in winter June to September where temperatures may reach 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit depending on which part of the country you are visiting.
Winter is a good time for game viewing because it tends to be the dry season in most of South Africa, bringing animals to waterholes and out of shady areas so you can see them. Vegetation isn't super dense at this time, so you can see them more clearly.
Safety
An alert tourist will not have many problems, even though the crime statistics in South Africa can be intimidating. They do however, have to be alert and aware of what is going on around them. In the smaller towns, petty theft is likely to be the only crime encountered. Cameras, cell phones, and wallets are likely to get taken if left unattended. Lock cars up and lock all valuables in trunks.
The animals that you'll see are wild, and very dangerous. Follow any rules that you are told. Although an animal may appear unperturbed by a car stopping nearby, they can quickly change their minds if they feel threatened, with disastrous consequences.
Check and see if the area is prone to diseases like malaria. Whether or not it is malaria prone, have insect spray on you at all times. Sunscreen is essential too.
A South African safari can offer you unprecedented, up-close views of animals you may never see outside of a zoo. The 'Big Five' - lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and Cape buffalo - are supplemented by a wide variety of antelope, giraffe, zebra, warthogs and many other species, including many unusual and magnificent birds. With beautiful landscapes, lovely beaches and many other attractions, make sure you don't make your South African safari too short, as you will want some time to see what this diverse country has to offer.
