The Necessity of Burglar Alarms

A burglar alarm hampers any type of disturbance into your home, and protects your family from any threat. It can come in different kinds, and can apply different systems as well. In fact, some alarm systems do not only intercept burglaries, but even fire and similar dangers as well.

Burglar alarms can be for indoor or for external use. Indoors, the most commonly applied are Passive Infrared Detectors, usually seen in residential houses and in small businesses simply because they're affordable. They detect threats by looking for changes in temperature. On the other hand, Ultrasonic detectors use movement to detect any obtrusion, while Photoelectric Beams detect the presence of an intruder when the beam is obstructed. Other indoor alarms are glass break sensors, along with fumes, high temperature and carbon monoxide sensors.

Outside alarms also differ, but are more likely to have false alarms. Vibration or Inertia Shakers can have a minimal false alarm rate, and depends on vibration and movement to detect danger. Passive Magnet Field Detectors are also less likely to sound off a false alarm, using an electromagnetic field generator that triggers the alarm when the magnetic field is tripped. These are definitely more expensive, as outdoor systems do not only have the harder problem of segregating certain from false threats, but would also have the ability to endure environmental circumstances. There are other less expensive options such as the E-field, although this triggers numerous false alarms because it cannot classify human from animal.

Additionally you can choose between making your burglar alarm monitored, or unmonitored. Monitored systems are linked to a main control unit, where all alarms which are activated are handled. It is then up to the main control unit to call up the law enforcement and inform them of the danger. This would mean extra fees, and would also fail to be as efficient if there are any outages in phone lines and power lines. Unmonitored systems would mean that you need to contact the law enforcement yourself, or rely on a neighbor to notice the threat and communicate it to the authorities.

Despite having the most state of the art systems, you should still remind your family to be always vigilant. Keep in mind there isn't any faultless burglar alarm, and even the most pricey security alarms would probably be unsuccessful if you keep on being remiss about your security.
